Healthy. Cocktails. These Are My Two Favorite Words Together At Last.
What could be better? Being healthy on a Friday (or Saturday, or…) by enjoying a delicious fresh wonderful cocktail. I have personally started a trend around the office after sipping on that deliciously, guilt-free turmeric and ginger cocktail last Friday at sunset. Even us “health freaks” can’t resist a drink at 4 pm on a Friday afternoon.
Today, the tradition continues (it is a week-old after all.)
I just love experimenting with lots of different types of cocktails that you can drink (almost completely) guilt free. What I’ve come to realise is that there’s actually so much you can do with tasty fruits, vegetables and even spices. In my opinion, it’s silly to cut out alcohol entirely. I mean you don’t need to deprive yourself of a little fun. You have so many alternatives right in front of you, without entirely ruining your hard-worked waistline.
So What’s On The Menu Skye?
I’m the kind of girl who’s always got an eye for new things. Mostly I window shop and look at things way above my price range, #TheStruggleIsReal. But mostly, finding random little things in arbitrary shops like ice trays that make huge ice cubes. You can even get one’s that create different shapes from hearts. to stars, to frogs – you name it.
Berry-Infused, Vodka Ice Block Cocktails!
They are super easy to make, delicious and surprisingly slimming.
So before I reveal the party trick, I just want to emphasize to you that berries are amazing.
As you may know, Blueberries are filled with antioxidants, called anthocyanins. These have shown to sharpen memory as you age. Research also shows that Raspberries have anti-cancer properties because they’re made of the compound Ellagic acid. All berries, including Strawberries are filled with fiber which promotes healthy digestive systems, hearts and bones. Plus, they’re so delectable.
As for Vodka it’s colorless, flavorless and odorless. It also blends beautifully with other liquids without killing the flavor or being too overpowering. This is mainly why us cocktail drinker’s love it. Interestingly it also has some great health benefits. It may not be a green smoothie, but it certainly is nice to know the positive things you can do for your body – within moderation, of course.
Research shows that Vodka is great for stress reduction, it’s low in calories and even has medicinal properties. According to the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory, it only contains 64 calories per ounce and is completely carbohydrate free. Whereas beer is entirely carbohydrates and can have 100 calories per serving. The problem is mixing Vodka with sugary drinks or liqueurs. Do this and you’ll pile on the calories.
Not reason enough for you? Well studies have shown that drinking Vodka once a day for women or twice a day for men may even lower mortality, increase cardiovascular health, lower hospitalizations, lower body weight and decrease risk of stroke.
So I don’t know about you, but I’m on-board and ready to get the party started.
All you need is:
- Mixed Berries (Blueberries, Strawberries and Raspberries.) The frozen mixes are great too.
- A silicone ice-cube mold just like one of these. The choice of shape, is up to you.
- A freezer
- A blender
- Of course, Vodka.
- Throw the mixed berries into your blender.
- Pour the blended berries into your ice tray.
- Freeze overnight and you’re sorted.
- Once frozen, pop out an ice cube and top with a shot (or two) of Vodka and then add some sparkling water. With each sip, the berry flavor will intensify as the ice cube melts. For those that aren’t big drinkers, then this is also just as yummy without the Vodka.
- Garnish with some mint, sit back and relax.
