In 2019, Learn To Live In The Moment

This is the time of year where we contemplate our New Year’s resolutions for 2019.   As you think about yours, consider there is one resolution you can make, without much effort. And that is, to give yourself the gift of the present.  To live in the moment.

We all naturally possess the ability to live in the moment, to be more mindful. However,  we need to be conscious of this to exercise this right. And believe it or not, being mindful is more readily available to us when we practice it on a daily basis. It helps to put some space between ourselves and our reactions, breaking down conditioned responses.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you are directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions you are being mindful. There’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually re-modelling the physical structures for better long term health.

Think in the now, be in the now. Here’s how…

Set aside some time. You don’t need any special equipment to access your mindfulness skills, but you do need to set aside some quiet time and space.

Switch off your electronic screens and put them away. All of them. Enough said

Observe the present moment as it is.   The aim of mindfulness is not quieting the mind, or attempting to achieve a state of eternal calm. The goal is simple: you’re aiming to pay attention to the present moment, without judgement. Easier said than done, we know.

Let your judgements roll by. When you notice judgements arise during your practice, you can make a mental note of them and let them pass.

Observe the present moment as it is. The mind often gets carried away in thought. That’s why mindfulness is the practice of returning, again and again to the present moment.

Be kind to your wondering mind. Don’t judge yourself for whatever thoughts crop up, just practice recognizing when your mind has wondered off and gently bring it back.

Just breathe. Believe it or not, we actually forget to breath freely and well, especially when we are stressed. Be conscious of your breath. And if you find mastering your breath difficult, then in 2019 find a breath practitioner and learn how to breath properly. You will find it will vastly improve your life.

In 2019 be conscious and committed

Give yourself the gift of the present. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said,”Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.:”
