If you don’t know what CrossFit is by now, you have probably been living under a rock.  Since its development in 2000, it has taken the world by storm. A physical exercise philosophy as well as a competitive fitness sport, CrossFit is practiced by members of over 13 000 affiliated gyms worldwide, as well as participants who complete daily workouts through Internet and trainer guided training programmes.

Developed by Greg Gassman, it incorporates elements from: high intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport, calisthenics and strongman, as well as other daily muscle and cardio exercises.

The classes use equipment from multiple disciplines, including barbells, dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, jump ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls, plyo boxes, resistance bands, rowers, and various mats.

The aim is not to specialise in one area of training, but rather to assist individuals of all shapes and sizes in optimising their overall fitness and developing a strong body that is capable of approaching any physical requirement.

“CrossFit is not a specialised fitness program, but a deliberate attempt to optimise physical competence in each of 10 recognised fitness domains,” says founder Greg Glassman. Those domains are: strength, speed, cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, coordination, agility, balance, flexibility, power, and accuracy.

One example of a beginner’s workout is the benchmark workout called Cindy. This is a bodyweight circuit that can be done anywhere – the only equipment required is a pull up bar.

Within 20 minutes, as many rounds as possible:

5 pullups

10 pushups

15 squats
