8 Bad Habits To Forgo Because They’re Aging You

While ageing is a natural, biological process that we all have to eventually accept – nobody ever wants to look older than they actually are. Often, genetics and skin tone can determine how well one ages yet there are other external factors that can encourage premature aging. Some of us may be oblivious to daily bad habits that are quickly speeding up the aging process. That being said, read on to find out which of these bad habits are likely to make us look and feel years beyond our actual age.

1. A strong love for the wrong meats

Processed meats such as hot dogs, salami and sausages contain harmful substances such as preservatives and saturated fats – both of which encourage inflammation in the body. As inflammation is at the core of many chronic diseases, it’s advisable to stay clear of these types of meats.

Moreover, charred meats should also be excluded from your barbecue meals as the charred appearance means that said meats likely contain carcinogenic compounds.

2. Poor sleepbad habits | Longevity LIVE

Countless studies continue to emphasise the importance of a good night’s rest and it’s important that they do not stop. It’s no secret that a lot of us are not getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep and this is actually ageing us. Poor sleep is one of the bad habits that can lead to weight gain and depression, as well as an increased risk for heart disease and diabetes.

If you’re battling to get some shut-eye, we recommend these bedroom plants that are sure to help you get a good night’s rest.

3. Neglecting eye-care

Our eyes are the first to age due to the skin that surrounds them being the thinnest part of the body. That being said, it’s imperative to purchase a good eye cream that can help to  preserve and strengthen the area around your eyes.

4. You’re constantly stressedbad habits | Longevity LIVE

Stress is actually one of the most aging factors that we are all constantly attempting to deal with.

Chronic stress means heightened levels of cortisol and this only increases the risk of weight gain, heart attacks, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease. Moreover, you’re also likely to crave junk food (be it salty and fried or processed and sugary) when you’re stressed and this can also shorten your lifespan.

5. You forgo sun-protectionbad habits | Longevity LIVE

Vitamin D is essential for optimal health and a lot of us aren’t getting enough of it. However, while sunlight exposure is the best way to get your dose of vitamin D, we’re often guilty of not applying enough sun protection before we head out.

The first signs of wrinkles and fine lines often occur as a result of sun damage as UV rays affect the production of both collagen and elastin. If that’s not enough, these rays can also increase the risk of you developing skin cancer. Thus, it’s always imperative to apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 (free of oxybenzone) everyday and to stay clear of tanning beds.

6. You go over a glass a daybad habits | Longevity LIVE

A glass of red wine after a long day has been revealed to provide health benefits, yet drinking to excess can do quite the opposite. Alcohol is a diuretic thus excessive drinking will only serve to dehydrate the body, aging it. Moreover, some mixed drinks are high in sugar and this can also dehydrate the skin whilst causing breakouts.

7. You’re a sitter

While your desk job is incredibly important, sitting at your desk all day has been linked to being detrimental to your brain health. The study, published earlier this year in the journal PLOS ONE, found that prolonged sitting can increase one’s risk for neurodegenerative diseases.

Sitting at your desk all day can encourage a sedentary lifestyle and this form of living is sure to age you. Moreover, it can also lead to poor posture which will only add more strain to your muscle and joints. If you simply don’t have the time, we recommend these stretches you can do right at your desk.

However, it is important to live an active lifestyle and there are ways to sneak exercise into your busy day.

8. You smokebad habits | Longevity LIVE

As if you needed any more reason to give up this truly unhealthy habit. By now it must be common knowledge that smoking causes lung cancer and heart disease. A fact that they don’t put on the packet: smoke from the cigarette can damage your teeth and lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines on your face and around your mouth.

No one wants to age (or look older) than they actually are. Also, prevention is better than cure, so if you are guilty of these bad habits but the consequences have not yet caught up with you, stop now.  That way, you can do your best to stay young and ensure that you live a long, healthy life.
