Can avocados fight cancer? According to a study published in the journal Cancer Research, a lipid found in avocados has recently been shown to target Acute Myeloid Lukemia (AML) cells without negatively impacting healthy cells.
AML is an aggressive form of cancer that kills 90% of people over 65 who are diagnosed. Drugs that operate on stem cells are the most effective in treating the disease.
“The stem cell is really the cell that drives the disease,” said Professor Paul Spagnuolo, a researcher from the University of Waterloo responsible for the study, in a statement about the paper. “The stem cell is largely responsible for the disease developing and it’s the reason why so many patients with leukemia relapse.”
Can Avocados Fight Cancer?
Avocatin B is a lipid derived from avocado which has the novel ability to induce a cytotoxic (toxic to cells) reaction in AML cells.
Avocatin B does this by targeting those cells that lack functioning mitochondria in a process known as localization. It then inhibits fatty acid oxidization and decreases NADPH (a membrane-bound enzyme complex) production which results in the death of Acute Myeloid Lukemia cells.
The other exiting discovery is that the naturally occurring enzymes which would transport Avocatin B, to the area where AML cells are present, are unaffected by the lipid, making it possible to avoid gross negative side effects from the treatment.
Of this study, the researchers say that; for the first time ever, there is the possibility of creating a treatment that directly targets and eradicates leukemia cells due to the difference in the way that their mitochondria functions compared to that of healthy cells.
So can avocados fight cancer? No, but a lipid derived from them can!
The drug is many years away from medical use, but is being prepared for phase 1 trails.
