What’s The Deal With CoQ10 For Improved Health?

Coenzyme Q10 (also simply known as Q10 or CoQ10) is a coenzyme that, aside from being added to many lotions due to its firming properties, is naturally produced by the body.

Alternatively known as ubiquinone, CoQ10 is found throughout the body in cell membranes, with the highest concentrations located in the heart, kidneys, lungs and liver. As a result, it has a number of responsibilities.

How it works

CoQ10’s main functions in the body are to create energy within in the cells for the purpose of bodily functions and to act as an antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from free radical damage.
Unfortunately, like many other enzymes and properties within the human body, coenzyme Q10 decrease with age thus affecting the potential benefits it can provide. Luckily, this enzyme can be boosted through supplements and foods, allowing for individuals to enjoy the potential benefits listed below.

1. Brain health

Unfortunately, ours brains are easily vulnerable to oxidative damage and this then leads to the formation of free radicals which then increase the risk for cognitive disorders such Huntington’s disease, ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. However, one 2008 study revealed the potential that CoQ10 may have in being a viable antioxidant strategy for neurodegenerative disease. Moreover, one other study showed that individuals who had neurodegenerative disease also tended to have reduced levels of CoQ10 in their blood.

2. Diabetes

Cell damage due to free radicals often results in chronic diseases and diabetes is one of them. Not only have CoQ10 been linked to preventing diabetes but one study published in the Peer-reviewed medical journal PLOS One revealed that CoQ10 can potentially regulate blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.

3. Enhance exercise performance

Due to the effect that oxidative stress has on muscle functions, exercise performance can be affected. Fortunately, with CoQ10 being able to reduce oxidative stress, exercise performance can not only be enhanced but fatigue can also be decreased.

4. Fertility

The decline of CoQ10 in the body can make female eggs more susceptible to oxidative damage and male sperm affected by oxidative damage, can lead to infertility, lower sperm count and poor sperm quality.

Fortunately, the consumption of foods rich in this enzyme as well as CoQ10 supplements can help to protect female eggs. Also, preliminary clinical trials that used the supplementation of CoQ10 in men with fertility issues showed an improvement in sperm quality, movement and count.

5. Youthful skin

With our skin being the largest organ in the body, it’s important to be aware of any compounds and enzymes that can help protect it against oxidative stress and free radicals. Furthermore, reduced levels of CoQ10 affect the production of collagen and elastin- proteins that help provide the skin with a youthful, firm appearance.

Topical application of CoQ10 onto the skin can help reduce visible sun damage, which is often characterized by wrinkles, fine lines and sunspots. It also penetrates deep into the skin, encouraging the production of both collagen and elastin.

Food sources

CoQ10 can be found in green grapes, kiwis, parsley, sesame seeds, wild-caught Alaskan salmon, herring and broccoli.

However, as COQ10 is found in low quantities in these foods, most people opt for supplements, with recommended daily dosages 90 milligrams to 200 milligrams.
