The coronavirus is insidious. This is what Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, toldΒ  Trevor Noah on The Social Distancing Show.

Coronavirus is an insidious virus

How do you protect yourself from the virus?

Fauci explained the varying degrees of risk. He said theΒ virus is easily spread by sneezing and coughing. TheΒ  dropletsΒ  hang around a bit.

The virus is transferred through handshaking, so just do not do this any more.

Opening door knobs with your hands is another problem.. You cannot be obsessive, but this is a real issue. The virus can live on inanimate objects for a while.

He stressed the importance of continuing social distancing and frequent hand washing. Social distancing of 6 feet is a necessity.

You have to wash your hands as often as you can, as you may be inadvertently touching stuff. And while we cannot get overly obsessed with touching packages, we just need to be mindful of how the virus lives onΒ  surfaces

Even if you are young you are not absolutely invulnerable

Noah also asked Dr.Fauci to address the mistaken belief that young people are immune to coronavirus.

Dr.Fauci confirmed that β€œEven though you are young, you are not absolutely invulnerable,”

He says many young people who have gotten sick and are dying from the disease do not have underlying illnesses.

Many are also asymptomatic and are passing it along to more vulnerable members of their families. SoΒ  younger people have a responsibility. They have to protect others.

Dr.Fauci told Noah, despite the dialogue around therapies,Β  there’s β€œno proven safe and effective, direct therapy for coronavirus disease.” He confirmed that there is only anecdotal evidence that drugs like chloroquine work. He also noted that there are ongoing trials to find a treatment and cure.

And, as Dr.Fauci has said before, it is the virus that sets the timeline.

β€œPeople say, arbitrarily, in two weeks we’re going to be OK. But it depends upon the kinetics of the outbreak,”

β€œIn general, if you look historically at the countries that have been through the whole cycle,Β  In China it was about eight weeks or so before it went way up and then way down.”

The Bottom Line on Coronavirus in the US

Dr.Fauci assured Noah that the federal government and local and state governments are working together.

Explaining, β€œThe federal government is a facilitator. It’s a supplier, it’s a supporter and that’s the way things should be going, and that’s what we’re starting to see now as we’re catching up on things that weren’t done so well at the beginning… It really is a marriage between the federal government as the facilitator and supporter of the real action is, at the state and local level,” he concluded.
