Problem Skin In Adulthood: The Causes & Treatments

Problem skin may seem like a teenage problem but it still occurs post adolescence. Acne in adulthood is an issue can affect both your self-esteem and confidence. Stress hormones in the body are bound to the receptors in the sebaceous glands. When stressed,our adrenal glands produce the hormone cortisol to help us cope. As cortisol is released, a small bit of testosterone leaks into the blood. This leak then increases the production of sebum.

If your acne is hormone related, the best remedy would be balance out the hormones in your system. Contraceptives help clear away acne as the ingredients they contain alter hormone levels. However, hormonal therapy should not be the single solution as not everyone is viable for it. If you are pregnant or looking to be, have a personal history of breast cancer, have abnormal vaginal bleeding and high blood pressure then hormonal therapies should not be part of your treatment.

According to Dr. Schultz, foods causing breakouts is more of a subjective argument as there is yet to be a study that proves a specific diet flares up problem skin. Chocolate might cause acne in some but not others. However, he does advise that we be conscious of how much iodine and sugar we consume. Sugar raises insulin levels and insulin triggers testosterone in the body. By following a healthy diet, both your skin and health will reap the benefits.

Acne can also be a side effect from any medication you may be taking or simply a sign of an underlying medical condition. Consult your doctor in both cases.

Lastly, when the skin comes into contact with germs and bacteria, it faces breakouts and irritation. It is recommended that you learn to both regularly wash your pillowcase as well as clean and disinfect your cell phone screen.

  1. Product Choice and Application

The wrong skincare products can block pores so you need be conscious of the ingredients they contain. Opt for water-based or non-comedogenic cleansers as opposed to rich and greasy products. When dealing with pimples, resist the urge to pluck and prod at them because these actions not only generate more bacteria on the skin but they can also result in scarring and that is harder to get rid of than blemishes.
