Sleeping beauty – the benefits of skincare products

At night, while you sleep, your body recharges and so does your skin. Here’s what you need to know about choosing the right night time beauty regime so that your skin wakes as refreshed as you are…

Rule: you can use a day cream day and night (unless it has a built-in sunscreen), but not a night cream night and day.

Night treatments are scientifically formulated to be used at night, when the skin rests. Night creams and night serums maximise and restore cellular function. they are designed to help the skin tackle the symptoms of fatigue and stress, and take advantage of your sleep cycle to regenerate the skin and erase signs of tiredness.
“During the night, your skin, like the rest of your body, goes into a regenerative state,” explains Aeysha Rajah from Skin Doctors. “Products that are designed for night-time use contain more active ingredients so that they can assist in this process. Night creams are often heavier and more hydrating, and anti-aging night creams, in particular, contain higher levels of active ingredients such as retinol, since they are specifically intended to be used at night when your skin is not exposed to UV exposure, which can cause irritation.”

Heather de Klerk, national training manager for Elizabeth Arden, adds: “Night creams are specifically designed or formulated to offer more nourishment at night, to replace the moisture that your skin has lost during the day, and they assist the skin with the reparative processes at night. When you are asleep, the reparative processes of your skin and body are at their most active; night cream works hand-in-hand with these processes to ensure that you wake up with your skin feeling renewed, refreshed, rejuvenated and hydrated.”

When you should start:

Night creams should be used from your 40s onwards, as this is when your skin requires more moisture, recommends Rajah. And they offer additional anti-aging benefits. If your skin is very dry and showing signs of premature aging, you might want to start using night treatments in your 30s.
