The Art of The Spa – The Saxon Hotel Villas and Spa
The Spa at the luxurious Saxon Hotel Villas and Spa, situated in the heart of Sandton, is a welcome retreat from the day-to-day stresses of modern, urban life, and its signature treatments are unrivalled in Johannesburg. Recently renovated by designer Stephen Falcke, its holistic modern design and facilities offer a world-class experience.
Who To Ask For
The Spa is run by Tanya Lopes, an experienced professional. I was assigned Nolu for my bespoke Saxon Himalayan Signature Journey. She is trained in somatology and is passionate about her work. For my unique Sound therapy session, I was in the caring hands of Cheryl. She has been working with Sound therapy for more than a decade. We had a good discussion on the benefits of sound therapy, and I felt very comfortable with her during this extraordinary process.
When To Go
Now is as good a time as any, but you will have to book. is is a popular spa, and the hotel guests make good use of the facility too. However, you may want to choose a time when you are detoxing, distressing or working on a specific aspect of your health, or simply want to indulge. And the time you choose will depend on what treatment you opt for.
You should give yourself enough time to enjoy all of the wonderful facilities before your treatment. Arrive at least an hour before and enjoy one of the plunge pools, designed specifically to reduce fatigue and induce a state of relaxation. Also, one of the great benefits of this spa is that it has a hair salon on site.
What To Get
There are many bespoke treatments to choose from, I chose the Sound therapy and the Saxon Himalayan Signature Journey. The Saxon Himalayan treatment is the crème de la crème of the Saxon Spa experience. I indulged in a skin-renewing salt scrub, followed by a stress-dissolving hot Granite Stone and soothing, cool Rose Quartz massage. The contrast was invigorating. I will definitely be returning for a Hamman Signature Therapy next time around. For this you need more time, and it is a wonderful part of any detoxification programme.
Of course, the spa also offers facials, waxing and grooming.
How To Make The Most Of It
You must take your time. Spoil yourself and give yourself at least half a day at the spa to get the full benefit of what it has to offer. There is also a floatation tank, which is a luxurious experience after a treatment.
Don’t Forget To Pack
You must pack a discreet swimming costume, to be worn at all times when using the hydro facilities. The spa provides a comfortable gown and slippers, also to be worn at all times. This is a private and discreet space, and adhering to spa etiquette is very important. It is also a quiet space and, understandably, children under 16 are not permitted to use the facilities.
Why This Spa?
The attention to detail, quality, professionalism and friendliness of the staff, as well as the products used, set it apart from the rest. While the spa stocks top-of-the-range products such as La Prairie, Elemis, HARNN, QMS and Margaret Dabs, it has also developed its own signature oils used in the therapies.
The facilities are private. You are treated like royalty. I loved the chandeliers in the treatment rooms, which have a story of their own. Artist Stephen Pikus and a community project that runs from Alexandra, created the unique lighting for the 10 treatment rooms – these were crafted using recycled glass and chunks of pink Himalayan salt.
The Spa also has a specially designed healthy menu. And with unique herbal tea infusions and snacks offered, it understands the experience has to be holistic, inside and out. The Spa offers everything from top to toe. It even has signature men’s treatments. However, it is the bespoke treatments and unique environment that make this spa one of the best in the country, if not all of Africa.
