6 Ways To A Greener and Sustainable Beauty Routine

If you’re looking to be as conscious about the environment as you are about your health, you can start by adopting greener lifestyle habits.  One area in which you can become more eco-friendly is your beauty routine.

As enthusiastic as you might be about going greener with your beauty routine, it’s not advisable to completely change your routine overnight. When making a life change, the best way to ensure that you stick to said change is by slowing transitioning into the new habit. That said, here are six tips to help make your beauty routine much more sustainable.

Sustainable beauty hacks

Be more water-conscious

Granted you need water to wash your face, but that doesn’t mean you should waste it.

When cleansing your face, it’s important that you do not leave the water running. Turn the tap off as you apply the cleanser with damp fingers. You can also use a damp face cloth to help remove the cleanser.

Also, while hot showers are great now and then, having them all the time can affect both the environment and your skin. Hot waters can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dry and dehydrated skin. In terms of the environment, it ends up wasting huge amounts of both water and energy. A cold shower now and then can protect the planet and boost your skin health by improving circulation and opening up your pores.

If you happen to be a beauty hoarder, it’s important not to let products go to waste.

Rather, donate them to a family member or friend. If neither party will take it, you can try donating them to a woman’s shelter. I’m sure that they’ll be well-received – especially in terms of essentials like cleansers and moisturizers.

Go for refills

Buying from brands that allow you to refill can help to reduce the amount of waste you create. Perfume giant Thierry Mugler offers customers the opportunity to refill their perfumes at a lower price, as opposed to buying a brand new one.

According to a study from the Global Web Index, over 40% of consumers prioritize sustainable packaging when it comes to choosing a product (1).  That said, aside from giving consumers the chance to refill their favorite beauty products, brands are also attempting to make their packaging as recyclable as possible. Also, if you’re unable to recycle the packaging by yourself, brands such as M.A.C encourage you to return their packaging in exchange for a free gift.

Furthermore, stay away from plastic packaging as plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental threats facing the world. In fact, plastic can take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills.

You can also start buying multi-purpose products as that means less packaging, less waste and you’ll save some money as well.

Opt for reusable face wipes and cotton pads

Cotton pads are used heavily in cosmetics – whether for makeup removal, cleansing or toning. That being said, their rapid accumulation can be extremely wasteful. Thankfully, there are cotton pads that you can wash and reuse anytime you need to. Both ProCIV and Wegreeco use bamboo to create reusable and sustainable products that you can use to cleanse your face.

Considering the fact that the wet wipes have been linked to endangering marine life and slowly destroying the world’s sewers, you can also use reusable cotton pads in place of common wet wipes.

Stay away from harmful ingredients

As we know, there are a few toxic beauty ingredients that can be harmful to our general health, such as parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. Unfortunately, these toxic cosmetic ingredients can also cause harm to the environment.

In 2018, Hawaii banned any sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate due to their debilitating effects on coral reefs. Additionally, plastic microbeads have been linked to causing harm to marine life.

That said, it’s always important to read the labels and ensure that your choice of a cosmetic product does not contain any toxic beauty ingredients or toxic sunscreen ingredients that may be harmful to the planet.

Support eco-conscious brands

By supporting beauty brands that are all about sustainability, you’ll know that you’re on the right track to a much greener lifestyle.

Aside from their products, these brands operate ethically, support local employment and they also create eco-friendly beauty tools. These brands include LUSH, SKOON, BYBI, and INIKA.
