In 1920s, Joseph Pilates came up with a form of exercise that would soon take the fitness world by storm. Pilates is a low-impact exercise. This amazing regime will improve your balance, flexibility, strengthen your core and tone your muscles. There’s good reasonΒ  more than 10 million people engage in this popular exercise. In this, the first in a series of weekly posts, Tanya Thompson, founder of Pilates Unlimited and Of-Course Online, demonstrates how to do the Pelvic Curl exercise at home.

Why is Pilates so popular?

Pilates offersΒ  a range of health benefits which make it an ideal anti-aging exercise. These include:

  • Improved brain function
  • A stronger core
  • Relief from back pain
  • An improved posture
  • Better sleep patterns
  • Effective weight management
  • Better breathing

Now with that said, you may be looking to start doing Pilates, but unsure of where to start? If that’s the case, then worry not as we have the perfect exercise to get you on your Pilates journey. Tanya Thompson has been teaching Pilates for over two decades and will be sharing her favorite exercises with us each week.

How To Do The Pelvic Curl?

Take a mind-body journey withΒ Pilates. I would like to invite you to discover the movement differently. Take this time to be still, feel, and embrace what your body has to offer you. This week we will be looking at one of the first exercises that you learn in Pilates, the Pelvic Curl. The focus of this exercise is to mobilize and warm up your spine as well as tone the back of your legs and glutes. When you try this exercise, really focus on keeping your shoulders and neck completely relaxed. Put all your energy and focus on your spine and hips while feeling a great stretch over the front of your thighs and hips.

Feel your spine connect to the floor as it articulates one vertebra at a time. You can repeat this movement 8 – 15 times to enhance your mind-body connection and to allow your body to engage the right muscles at the right time as you move. This is but one of the exercises that you are about to learn. As we embark on thisΒ PilatesΒ journey, we will introduce you to bothΒ PilatesΒ Mat andΒ PilatesΒ Equipment repertoire. Enjoy!
