Give your burger a healthy makeover – add an avo!

shutterstock_3631431Good news for all foodies who enjoy a weekend burger and not feel guilty about not following your diet. The modern burger is healthier than ever, featuring all-natural ingredients, with fresh creamy avocados topping the list of burger must-haves.

Research shows that avocados may have a role in promoting overall good nutrition and diet quality. US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) revealed that avocado consumers had a better diet quality and beneficial nutrient intakes; lower intake of added sugars; lower body weight, BMI and waist circumference; and higher “good cholesterol” levels.

The avo consumers surveyed, were also found to have a 50% lower odds-ratio for metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk for coronary artery disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes.

Added to this, a pilot study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and supported by the US Hass Avocado Board, has found that eating a burger with avocado could help reduce inflammation and the narrowing of blood vessels.

The study investigated the effects of adding half of a fresh medium Hass avocado to a hamburger (90% lean mince), on the movement of blood to different parts of the body and on inflammation, compared to a burger without avocado. Among the results recorded was that some of the after-meal effects observed after eating a plain burger, specifically inflammation and narrowing blood vessels, were reduced within hours of eating the avo burger.

Grilled 100% beef, lamb and venison patties, grilled chicken breast and fish fillets, and wholesome veggie patties and vegetable stacks have all seen burgers shake off their junk food label to once again offer nutritious, convenient family meals.

At the same time, limp lettuce and the obligatory slices of tomato and cheese have made way for much tastier natural toppings, such as blue, brie and goat’s cheese; chili and herb salsas; micro greens and sprouts; hummus, tapenade and fruit chutneys; and an array of grilled vegetables. Avos are a hot favourite; sliced, chopped or mashed, they’re the easiest way to add tasty natural goodness to every burger imaginable. So go on, give your burgers a healthy, on-trend edge and add an avo!
