Super-mom Kourtney Kardashian’s tips for healthy living
The Kardashians may be a household name through their reality television shows and public exploits, but the eldest of the Kardashian clan, Kourtney, has earned her position as an inspiration and role model. The 35-year-old busy mom of three is a reality TV star, businesswoman and fashion designer, but her hectic schedule hasn’t stopped her from maintaining a fitness regime and healthy diet. Here are some lessons we can learn from her that will inspire our own 2015 health journey.
HEALTHY HABITS CAN BE LEARNT AND IMPLEMENTED AT ANY AGE. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START.
In a recent interview with Natural Health magazine, Kourtney said healthy eating wasn’t something that came naturally. “I was not raised this way – people just weren’t aware of healthy eating as they are today. When I got home from school, my snack was a bag of chips or cookies, and as an adult, I didn’t even know what organic meant – I’d just go to the market and buy the same things my mom bought. I didn’t really have any thoughts about it before I had my kids. Starting off, I was big on breastfeeding; I nursed my first for 14 months and my second for 16. That was important to me. Then I began making their baby food myself, all of it organic. After that, I was super-cautious about what to introduce into their diets. I called a bunch of restaurants in my neighbourhood that I had assumed served all-organic food, and so many didn’t.”
FIND A HEALTH REGIME THAT WORKS PERSONALLY FOR YOU. YOU MAY NEED TO TRY A FEW TO SEE WHAT SUITS YOUR NEEDS BEST, AS EVERYONE IS INDIVIDUAL.
Kourtney told Natural Health: “I got really into Ayurveda and did the Panchakarma cleanse [a detoxification treatment involving massage, herbal therapy and other procedures]. Through that, I met my yoga teacher, who taught me her way of preparing food. We would do yoga for an hour and then she’d stay for another hour and cook with me. That’s where I got all of my rules. In our house, we do everything whole: whole milk and full-fat cheeses. And I use ghee and coconut oil for cooking. I turn to my Ayurvedic friends for health advice when it comes to my kids, too. If Mason or Penelope has a rash, I’ll look into natural treatments first. But they have their paediatrician, and I’m not afraid to give them medicine if it gets to that point.”
LOOK FOR BEAUTY AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT ARE FREE FROM ANY NASTIES.
Since the sisters have started to put together their makeup collection, Kardashian Beauty, Kourtney has been extra-invested in their list of no-no ingredients. “It’s an ingredients blacklist that we don’t allow into the products – no parabens, no sulphates. Being a mom, I have become really invested in that – I just feel like, once I know something, I can’t go backwards and pretend like I don’t know it,” she told Intothegloss.com. On her blog she adds that she always gets so excited when she can share with others the brand’s extensive blacklist of ingredients. “It makes me so happy that I can wear our products knowing that they are free from so many harmful ingredients that exist in products today.” (The Kardashian Beauty range is available locally at Azulade and Stuttafords. FORGET APPLES THIS YEAR; COCONUTS ARE YOUR GO-TO SUPERFOOD.
On her website, www. kourtneykardashian.com, she reveals: “I eat coconuts all the time and I use coconut oil every day. Not only do I love the smell and taste of coconut, this magical fruit has so many health benefits! It boosts your metabolism, aids in weight loss, supports immunity, stops sugar cravings, and, best of all, hydrates and makes skin stronger, preventing wrinkles and sagging! I love to make coconut pudding for a little sweet treat; I also use the oil as a hair mask and I use coconut oil as body lotion every day; it makes my skin and hair so smooth and soft.”
YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE AS YOUR LIFE STAGES CHANGE.
Kourtney says that during her pregnancy with her third child, she changed her beauty routine to better suit her skincare and body needs at this time. “I’m constantly using this pregnancy skincare from Mama Mio – there’s one cream for your boobs and a few for your stomach,” she told Natural Health. “After I shower, I take five minutes to myself to apply the lotions and really take care of my skin.”
IF YOU DO ONE THING IN 2015, IT SHOULD BE TO SPREAD A LITTLE KINDNESS.
Recently, Kourtney shared that she helped her friend Stacey Bendet (of Alice & Olivia) create a kindness wall. The desire came from a recent spate of tragedy that seems to have infused life in general. “She was inspired to do these kindness walls, which are not only aesthetically beautiful, but send a beautiful message. She is one of my mommy muses. She inspires me as a mom every day, balancing it all.” Kourtney says the Kindness Project was started to inspire kindness and creativity for all ages, by creating beautiful and artistic walls in public places that are covered in messages of love and kindness. People can take, share or add their own positive messages, with a drawing or painting on one side and a message on the other, which make a colourful and vibrant wall of beauty and love. “The message I chose to add to the wall was ‘It’s not how much you give, but how much you love’. It’s a simple and sweet message that, when posted with the others on the wall, helps make the world a better place.” Kourtney adds that the Kindness Project can take other forms, and can be simply expressed through an Instagram message that brightens people’s day, using the hashtag #thekindnessproject. “Do your part today and join me. Kind words can heal!”
KOURTNEY’S NATURAL HOMEMADE DEODORANT
“For anyone who watches Keeping Up With the Kardashians, you will know that I am into all-natural deodorant. I found a great recipe to make your own on freepeople.com.”
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
½ cup organic coconut oil
¼ cup baking soda
¼ cup arrowroot flour
5-10 drops essential oil mixture
(Kourtney likes jasmine and bergamot)
- Mix the baking soda and arrowroot flour in a medium bowl. If you have sensitive skin, use less baking soda and more arrowroot flour – or you can substitute arrowroot flour for baking soda completely.
- Add the coconut oil and mix until it’s a smooth consistency. There shouldn’t be any leftover powder. If your mixture seems too dry, add more coconut oil and mix some more.
- Add your essential oil mixture (optional). This step is just for the fragrance.
KOURTNEY’S SKINNY CAULIFLOWER TOTS
Kourtney loves to find healthy, organic alternatives for the foods that her family enjoys. She came across this recipe which, she says, is easy to whip up as an appetiser or a side.
INGREDIENTS (ALL ORGANIC/ NON-GMO PRODUCTS):
2½ cups raw cauliflower florets (about
2 cups when cooked)
1 large egg
1 large egg white
½ cup onion, diced
1 tsp garlic, minced
2 Tbsp fresh parsley, minced
½ cup cheese, grated
½ cup seasoned breadcrumbs
Salt and pepper, to taste
First, cook the cauliflower florets by pouring 6mm of water into a large pan over medium heat. Once the water is simmering, reduce the heat to low and add the cauliflower. Cover with a lid and simmer for about 5 minutes. The cauliflower should be tender, but not mushy when done. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Chop the cauliflower into fine pieces and place two cups of the cauliflower pieces into a medium bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and stir. Shape about 1½ Tbsp of cauliflower mix into an egg shape and place on a prepared baking sheet. Be careful not to overcrowd the baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes, flipping the tots occasionally to brown each side. Serve immediately.
